Health information for young people

Confidentiality

Everyone is entitled to confidentiality regardless of age. You can talk to a nurse or doctor in confidence; we are not allowed to tell. If you are under 16 we will still keep your information confidential. However, we would encourage you to discuss your problems and treatment with your parents/ guardian. We follow clear guidelines. We can still treat you if you choose not to discuss things with your parents/ guardian.

The only reason why we might have to consider passing on confidential information without your permission would be to protect you or someone else from serious harm. We would always try and discuss this with you first.

If you have any worries about confidentiality, please feel free to ask a member of staff.

Booking an appointment

You can call the surgery whenever the phone lines are open from 08:30 - 18:00. If you are requesting to book an appointment to see the doctor the receptionist will take your phone number and any special instructions about when you can be contacted. The receptionist may ask you for the reason for your call. This is so we can prioritise the most serious problems first. If you do not want to say, just say "it's personal".

Your health

If you need to see a doctor or nurse you can choose who you see when you make an appointment.  We have male and female doctors available. You don't have to come with an adult and you might want to bring a friend with you.

Chlamydia Testing

We are offering chlamydia testing to all our patients under 25.

The test is very simple. You will be asked to provide a self-taken vaginal swab for women or a 'pee in a pot' urine test for men. There will be no need to be examined!

Don't be concerned if we offer it to you, we are offering it to everyone under 25!

HPV vaccination

There is a national campaign to immunise young women against HPV. Human Papilloma Virus has been linked to cervical cancer. Some girls are being immunised at school. If you have not yet started a course, please contact our Practice Nurse to discuss things.
