Cervical smears

All women between the age of 20 and 65 should have a regular smear test every three to five years. We send out appointment reminders to all of our patients to let you know when your next smear is due.

Child development

We send out appointments for regular checks and immunisations for pre-school children. This is to make sure that our doctors and health visitors can check that children are developing normally and that there’s nothing to worry about.

Chronic Disease Management

In addition to GP consultations the practice offers a range of clinics and healthcare services:

Clinical pharmacist

We have a clinical Pharmacist working at Wembury Surgery 2 days per week. 

What can a Clinical Pharmacist do? 

  • Give advice on medication 
  • Advice on side effects to certain medication  
  • Management of long-term conditions 
  • Medication reviews 

Our Clinical Pharmacist offers both telephone consultations and face to face consultations.

Contraceptive services

Our doctors and nurses give confidential advice on all aspects of family planning.

Counsellors and advice services

First contact physiotherapist

What can a Musculoskeletal (MSK) First contact physio offer?  

  • Full assessment and triage of an MSK condition / symptom
  • Creating a care plan to manage the condition 
  • Telephone and in-person consultation 

What problems can they help with?  

  • Any new presentation of an MSK condition / symptom
  • Corticoid steroid injection therapy 
  • MSK condition diagnosis
  • Onward referral 
  • Investigation requests and interpretation 
  • New soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains, or sports injuries 
  • New arthritis / arthritis exercise advice – all joints
  • New onset of spinal pain including lower back, mid back, neck pain with no red flag features

Health and wellbeing coach

Who can benefit from this service? 

The health and wellbeing coach work holistically with people to provide coaching support over several planned sessions to help them to work towards wellbeing-related goals such as managing a long-term condition, increasing motivation, and taking steps to get healthier and improve circumstances.

  • Behaviour change 
  • Managing health conditions 
  • Achieving goals 
  • Motivation

Health screening

We offer a wide range of health screening for men and women at our surgery.

Mammograms

Women aged between 50 and 60 are advised to attend the Breast Screening Unit every three years for a mammography. This is to make sure we can check and detect any abnormalities as soon as possible. These appointments are sent out by the local Breast Unit.

Maternity care

Plymouth University Hospitals have introduced a new digital system for parents-to-be to register their pregnancy and access their health care records.

The new system called My Pregnancy Notes is a fully electronic patient record, which supports the clinical and administrative management of your complete maternity journey.

Minor operations

Removal of lumps, joint injections, and cautery are all offered.

Non-NHS services

Some services available are not covered under our contract with the NHS. This means that these services need to be paid for.

The services that include charges are:

  • Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements.
  • Insurance claim forms.
  • Passport signing.
  • Prescriptions for taking medication abroad.
  • Private sick notes.
  • Vaccination certificates.

Our reception staff and GPs will be happy to talk through the charges with you during your appointment.

Smoking cessation

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do.

If you live in Devon and currently smoke, you could be eligible for free support.

Social prescribing link worker

What does the service consist of? 

Our Social Prescribers work with patients to improve their wellbeing and connect them to different types of community-based support, for example: physical activity, creative activities and art, social opportunities, debt/benefits advice, employment, and volunteering. They provide support around more practical issues. 

What problems can a social prescriber help you with? 

  • Benefits / debt advice 
  • Bereavement
  • Change in circumstances
  • Volunteering
  • Low confidence / self esteem 
  • Poor Physical health
  • Perceived poor mental health 
  • Employment
  • Diagnosed mental health condition

If you wish to be referred to the social prescriber, please speak to reception. 

Travel advice, vaccinations and immunisations

We offer routine vaccinations.

It may take up to eight weeks for a full course of vaccinations, so please contact us in advance to give you plenty of time if you’re planning to go abroad where you need to be vaccinated.

Wembury Surgery does not provide a Travel Vaccination Service.

We would recommend you contact a specialist Travel Clinic to ensure you are fully vaccinated for your proposed travel.

The following vaccinations are available on the NHS: 

  • Tetanus
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis A

If you have confirmed a need for the above vaccines with your travel specialist, please contact reception to book an appointment with the nurse. Please ensure you leave enough time before your proposed travel dates to get your vaccination courses completed. 

If you need medication for your trip such as Malarial prophylaxis or you have been advised to take Acetazolamide for altitude sickness, this should be requested from the Travel specialist. The Surgery is not able to provide prescriptions for this.
